Addressing Inequalities in Higher Education: Insights from Dr. Anthony Abraham Jack

A new book by Dr. Anthony Abraham Jack, the Faculty Director at the Newbury Center, delves into the obstacles that disadvantaged students encounter in higher education. While colleges strive to diversify their student populations, they frequently overlook the essential cultural support these students require.

In his book, ‘Class Dismissed’, Jack draws on his personal experiences as a freshman at Amherst College. He recalls the challenges that often go unnoticed by more affluent peers, such as the abrupt closure of dining facilities during spring break. Financially strapped, he was able to remain on campus by taking a job, yet he faced difficulties that ultimately led him to conduct in-depth research on the subject.

Insights from Harvard Undergraduates

Jack’s book incorporates insights derived from interviews with 125 Harvard undergraduates. Through these conversations, he sheds light on the ongoing barriers that disadvantaged students face, emphasizing that financial aid alone does not resolve these issues. He posits that universities must go beyond merely admitting students from diverse backgrounds; they need to implement supportive measures that enable these individuals to flourish in the demanding landscape of higher education.
