In light of the challenges presented by generative artificial intelligence (AI), pandemics, and geopolitical tensions, universities are actively seeking innovative ways to provide transformative education and make a significant impact on society. One initiative in this direction is the inaugural Advanced University Leadership Programme (AULP) organized by Singapore Management University (SMU) Executive Development, which celebrated the graduation of its first cohort on September 25, 2024.
Launching the Advanced University Leadership Programme
The AULP was launched in March 2024 with the aim of equipping senior university leaders in Singapore with the necessary tools and perspectives to navigate the complexities of higher education in an era of rapid change. Supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE), the program welcomed 23 participants from various autonomous universities, including the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.
Graduation Ceremony Highlights
During the graduation ceremony held at SMU, President Prof. Lily Kong commended the graduates for their dedication and resilience throughout the program. She stressed the importance of universities maintaining agility in order to respond effectively to both national and global demands, a commitment underscored by initiatives such as the AULP.
Curriculum Details
Over the course of several months, participants engaged in a thoughtfully crafted curriculum aimed at tackling future challenges and seizing opportunities within their institutions. The program kicked off with a three-day module in Singapore that focused on genuine and adaptable leadership in the digital age. Participants were encouraged to anchor their actions in core values while remaining flexible in the face of change.
Insights from Industry Leaders
The curriculum included valuable interactions with industry thought leaders, who provided insights into both local and global trends in higher education. Notably, Lai Chung Han from the Ministry of Finance participated in discussions on the future of the education sector.
International Learning Experience
A pivotal aspect of the learning experience took place in the Netherlands, where participants participated in an immersive program centered on lifelong learning. Collaborating with faculty from institutions such as Vrije Universiteit and TU Delft, AULP participants gained a variety of perspectives on educational models and different cultural contexts.
Focus on Sustainable Value
The program concluded with discussions centered on creating sustainable value within universities, with an emphasis on business innovation and governance. Under the guidance of esteemed faculty members, participants explored strategies for thriving in an increasingly interconnected academic landscape.
Developing Transformative Leaders
Prof. Kong drew parallels between leadership and conducting an orchestra, emphasizing that effective leadership requires harmonizing diverse voices to achieve common goals. The AULP seeks to cultivate transformative leaders in higher education, fostering collaboration across Singapore’s university ecosystem.
