“Advancements in Rankings: New Tables and Refinements for World University Assessments”

Significant updates to the World University Rankings methodology have been announced for the upcoming year as part of ongoing efforts to improve assessment approaches.

Introduction of New Ranking Tables

This autumn, two new ranking tables will be introduced, along with adjustments to existing evaluations. The 2025 edition of the World University Rankings will include over 2,000 universities, representing the largest assessment of research performance to date.

Changes in Research Paper Requirements

While the core methodology will remain consistent with the previous year, notable changes include a reduction in the minimum annual requirement for research papers from 150 to 100. Institutions will still need to submit a total of 1,000 publications over a five-year period to qualify for ranking.

New Partnership with Elsevier

A new partnership with bibliometric partner Elsevier aims to enhance access to comprehensive research data, facilitating more in-depth analysis of research outputs. Furthermore, initiatives to improve data quality assurance will be introduced, which involve clarifying definitions and examining anomalies in voting patterns.

Development of a New Data Quality Engine

A new data quality engine is also under development to increase oversight of data submissions from universities. These updates reflect a commitment to maintaining transparency and ensuring thorough data evaluation in the realm of higher education rankings.
