APU’s #JanganKenaScam Initiative: Empowering Students and Staff Against Financial Scams

Asia Pacific University (APU) recently hosted an awareness program on financial scams titled “#JanganKenaScam” on September 26, 2024. The event attracted over 200 students and staff members and was supported by the Central Bank of Malaysia (Bank Negara Malaysia) in collaboration with the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM). Contributions were also made by APU’s School of Technology (SoT) and School of Finance and Accounting (SoAF).

Notable attendees included Associate Professor Dr. Thang Ka Fei, Senior Head of the School of Technology, and Associate Professor Dr. Chong Lee Lee, Head of the School of Finance and Accounting. The program focused on the growing threats posed by financial scams and strategies for navigating these challenges in the digital environment.

Educational Insights

Ts Muhammad Amin Sahari, a lecturer at the School of Technology, highlighted the importance of educating students regarding scam operations within the digital space. The initiative aimed to enhance understanding at the intersection of technology and security.

Ms. Nalini Gebril, a lecturer from the School of Finance and Accounting, also stressed the need for increased awareness of scams that take advantage of digital technologies. The event focused on the rising occurrence of financial scams in the online space.

Presentations and Discussions

The program featured a presentation by Ms. Nur Syamira binti Nor Amiza, a Senior Case Management Officer at Public Bank Berhad and a fraud risk assessor. She provided critical information about various types of scams, including job, e-commerce, impersonation, loan, and investment scams, alongside suggested preventive measures.

Interactive Engagement

To stimulate involvement, the event included an interactive quiz and personal sharing sessions, where five students and a lecturer recounted their experiences with scams. Participants displayed enthusiasm, and quiz winners received merchandise from ABM. An educational booth featuring a financial scam simulator offered further insights, and attendees were provided with complimentary refreshments.

Feedback and Impact

Feedback from attendees highlighted the program’s effectiveness. Zeti Qurshiah binti Juhari, a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science (Cybersecurity) student, noted that the event helped her recognize scams more effectively and equipped her with tools for verifying investment platforms. Another participant, Khuseinov Adil, also studying Cybersecurity, emphasized the importance of the National Scam Response Centre hotline, which bolstered his confidence in identifying suspicious activities.

Overall, the #JanganKenaScam initiative significantly enhanced the APU community’s awareness of financial scams, providing attendees with practical knowledge for remaining vigilant in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
