California State University, Northridge (CSUN) has received an Award of Merit in the Higher Education/Research category for its Maple Hall project. This newly constructed facility, valued at $46.8 million, spans 62,000 square feet and serves as a significant entry point to the campus, featuring a three-story atrium.
Project Overview
The construction of Maple Hall was executed by Gilbane Building Co. and marks the university’s first new academic building since 2009. The facility boasts a 3,050-square-foot auditorium, two lecture halls, four seminar rooms, and numerous classrooms. The architectural design emphasizes the use of natural light and the flexibility of learning spaces, allowing for adaptable classroom configurations to support various teaching methods.
Challenges Encountered
The construction process encountered several challenges, primarily related to material availability, which posed a risk for roofing installation delays. In response, the project team opted to utilize Cell-Crete, which helped maintain the original project timeline. Additionally, site excavations uncovered caissons from a previous building and a buried oil-filled pipe, both of which required careful management and removal to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Projected Completion
Although the project experienced delays due to unexpected circumstances and adverse weather, it ultimately adhered to a revised completion schedule, enabling classes to commence in the spring of 2024.
Significance of Maple Hall
The completion of Maple Hall reflects CSUN’s dedication to enhancing its academic infrastructure and providing modern educational facilities for students.
