Several universities have issued travel advisories for international students, recommending their return to campus before January 20. Institutions including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, and the University of Massachusetts have made these recommendations, largely due to concerns over potential travel and visa restrictions that might follow the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump.
Dartmouth College Incident
In a separate development, Dartmouth College has charged multiple students and a sorority in connection with the death of a student during the summer. The charges include allegations of providing alcohol to minors. The deceased student, Won Jang, was discovered in the Connecticut River, and authorities have deemed the incident an accident, ruling out evidence of hazing.
Harvard University’s Housing Policy
Additionally, Harvard University has denied winter housing requests from international undergraduates, despite earlier assurances that students demonstrating financial need would be allowed to stay on campus. This change represents a notable shift from previous policies and has prompted over 280 students to petition for resolution of the housing matter.
Support for Low-Income Students
In initiatives aimed at supporting low-income students, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has announced a program to provide free tuition starting in fall 2025 for students from families earning less than $200,000. Similarly, the University of Texas has declared that beginning next fall, students from families with incomes below $100,000 will also be eligible for free tuition.
