CUNY and NYC Schools Chancellors Distribute ‘Welcome to CUNY’ Letters at Brooklyn Technical High School for Seniors

CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and New York City Public Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos visited Brooklyn Technical High School to launch the “Welcome to CUNY” campaign. During this event, they distributed welcome letters to high school seniors. Brooklyn Technical High School is recognized for its large student population and for being a significant feeder school for CUNY, leading with the highest number of applicants to CUNY for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Fee Waivers and Personalized Letters

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that CUNY will waive application fees for all New York City Public Schools students through November 15. This initiative is designed to encourage college applications, particularly for students graduating in 2025, who will receive personalized welcome letters from both CUNY and NYC Public Schools. This marks the second consecutive year that CUNY and NYC Public Schools have collaborated on this initiative, reflecting a strong connection, as more than 80% of freshmen at CUNY originate from NYC Public Schools.

College Application Month Campaign

The efforts are part of Governor Hochul’s College Application Month campaign, which aims to remove financial barriers to higher education through fee waivers, welcome letters, and organized events.

Improving Student Preparedness

The Adams Administration is concentrating on improving students’ preparedness for high-demand jobs after graduation. NYC Public Schools have invested in ensuring an adequate number of in-person counselors and providing remote support. The system also offers early college credit opportunities and employs College and Career Bridge coaches to assist students with their transitions to higher education.

Contents of the Welcome Letters

The CUNY welcome letters contain essential information regarding the 19 undergraduate colleges available to students, as well as a QR code linking to an in-depth admissions website. Around 65,000 welcome letters have been distributed, with translations provided in nine languages.

Facilitating the Transition to College

The initiatives by CUNY and NYC Public Schools are intended to facilitate the transition from high school to college and to promote equitable access to post-secondary educational opportunities for all students.

Guaranteed Admission to Community Colleges

CUNY guarantees admission to its seven community colleges for any student with a high school diploma or equivalent. Efforts to enhance FAFSA completion have been supported by the CUNY Financial Aid Support Team, further demonstrating the University’s commitment to making higher education accessible.

Award Recognition for CUNY

CUNY received the Higher Education Innovation Award at the National Partnership for Student Success Higher Ed Summit in recognition of its innovative programs aimed at assisting students through the college application process.
