The higher education sector is increasingly vulnerable to cybersecurity threats, a concern highlighted during a session at the recent Educause Annual Conference. Participants emphasized the necessity for collaboration among institutions to address these vulnerabilities, underlining the importance of training and raising awareness among both staff and students.
Ransomware Threats in Higher Education
John Fraser, vice president of sales at Trinity Cyber, noted that colleges and universities were the predominant targets of ransomware attacks in 2023, surpassing other commercial and institutional environments in the United States. The evolving landscape of these threats is exacerbated by advancements in artificial intelligence, which enable cybercriminals to rapidly create new accounts and IP addresses.
Proactive Cybersecurity Strategies
At the 2024 Educause Annual Conference, held from October 21-24 in San Antonio, Texas, Fraser, along with Curtis White, chief information officer and vice president of IT services at St. Mary’s University, outlined strategies for transitioning from a reactive to a proactive cybersecurity model. This shift aims to move away from a response characterized by panic during incidents, focusing instead on preventive measures.
