Drake University Awarded 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity

Drake University has received the 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from *Insight Into Diversity* magazine, which specializes in coverage of diversity issues in higher education. This award identifies Drake as one of 113 institutions nationwide and marks it as the only recipient in Iowa, recognizing the university’s commitment to equity, access, inclusion, and diversity.

Acknowledgment in National Publication

Drake University will be highlighted in the November/December 2024 issue of *Insight Into Diversity*, reflecting its initiatives to promote diversity as a vital institutional asset. Terrance Pendleton, associate provost for campus equity and inclusion, indicated that the award demonstrates the joint efforts of the university community in supporting diversity.

Ongoing Initiatives for Campus Equity

The selection process acknowledges several of Drake’s ongoing initiatives aimed at improving campus equity. These include the Community of Racial Equity for Advancement (C.O.R.E.), various multicultural student organizations, the Unity Roundtable, and faculty and staff affinity groups. The Crew Scholars program also contributes to these efforts, alongside training sessions organized by the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) to enhance inclusivity. Additionally, the newly established Bulldogs Belong: Resilient and Thriving program aims to improve wellness and develop a sense of belonging among students and staff.

Creation of Intercultural Space

Furthermore, Drake University is in the process of creating its first dedicated intercultural space, the Sammons Intercultural Center, which will provide resources to support its multicultural organizations in their academic and community engagements.

Record Diversity in Enrollment

This award follows a recent announcement regarding the enrollment of Drake’s most diverse undergraduate class in its 143-year history, which boasts a 37.4% diversity rate among incoming first-year and transfer students, reflecting increased inclusive representation within the university.
