Education for Citizenship: President Carter’s Vision for Ohio State University

Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. has been formally inaugurated as the 17th president of The Ohio State University. In his investiture address, he introduced a strategic initiative titled “Education for Citizenship,” which is designed to establish the university’s objectives for the upcoming decade.

Ceremony Highlights

During the ceremony, attended by students, faculty, staff, and community leaders in Columbus, Carter emphasized the necessity for the university to pursue ambitious goals, particularly in the areas of affordability, entrepreneurship, and the integration of artificial intelligence in education.

Goals for the Future

Carter stated that he aims to transition from a phase of learning to one of action as he approaches his first year in office. He acknowledged the significance of evolving in response to future challenges, asserting that previous successes do not guarantee future accomplishments. He pointed out that a transformative decade lies ahead for both Ohio State University and the broader field of higher education, highlighting the importance of restoring public trust in these institutions.

Record Enrollment

The university reported its largest incoming class this autumn, with over 9,500 first-year students. Carter recognized the institution’s extensive research initiatives and its role as a major employer in the state.

Education for Citizenship 2035 Initiative

In outlining the “Education for Citizenship 2035” initiative, Carter emphasized six key areas of focus: academics, research and creative expression, healthcare, talent and culture, operations, and collegiate athletics. He expressed a desire to engage the university community in refining the strategic plan.

Enhancing Student Career Prospects

Carter also pledged to enhance career prospects for students by increasing internship opportunities and incorporating entrepreneurship into their educational experiences. He committed to upholding athletic scholarships across all 36 sports programs.

Community Involvement and Innovation

Community members were encouraged to contribute ideas regarding the strategic plan, particularly in relation to reducing student debt and expanding online education offerings. Additionally, Carter highlighted an emphasis on advancing research and development in artificial intelligence, positioning the university to be a leader in this innovative domain.

In closing, Carter expressed optimism about Ohio State’s potential to serve as a model for the future of higher education over the next decade. Drawing inspiration from the university’s alma mater, he emphasized the importance of community ties and collective efforts toward achieving institutional excellence.
