The Medical Biotechnology program at IMU University recently hosted a webinar aimed at strengthening connections between alumni and current students. The event took place on July 6, 2024, featuring three graduates who shared insights from their diverse career paths. This gathering also marked the introduction of the School of Health Sciences alumni chapter, designed to create networking opportunities for alumni participation in university events and activities.
Webinar Attendance and Organization
The webinar had 29 participants, including 11 alumni from the Medical Biotechnology program, 13 current students from cohorts MB121, MB122, and MB123, and five faculty members. Ts Dr. Tan Boon Hooi served as the organizing chair for the event. Dr. Lim Wui Zhuan (Adam), a member of the newly established alumni chapter, provided details regarding the objectives of the chapter.
Speaker Insights
One of the featured speakers, Rupini Krishna, a graduate from cohort MB115, currently holds the position of Senior Technical Sales Specialist at FC-Bios Sdn Bhd, a company specialized in microbiology and temperature monitoring solutions. In her presentation, Krishna recounted her transition from a Medical Biotechnology student to her current role in the life sciences sector, offering career advice to attendees.
Dr. Polly Yap Soo Xi, a post-doctoral research fellow at the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine & Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia, was the second speaker. An alumnus of cohort MB108, Dr. Yap holds an MSc in Medical & Health Sciences and a PhD in Medical Microbiology. She discussed her research career and advocated for the benefits of pursuing postgraduate education. Additionally, she shared her experiences with international grants that focus on infectious disease surveillance.
The final presentation was delivered by Dr. Lim Wui Zhuan (Adam), a lecturer at IMU and a graduate of cohort MB109, who furthered his studies with an MSc and PhD in related fields. He elaborated on how his education in the Medical Biotechnology program prepared him for his current academic position, detailing his professional journey and accomplishments in the field.

The webinar encouraged meaningful interactions between current students and alumni, underscoring the importance of alumni connections for mentorship and professional guidance.
