Joseph R. Marbach, Ph.D., President of Georgian Court University (GCU), has announced plans to retire on June 30, 2025. Assuming the presidency on July 1, 2015, Dr. Marbach is notable for being the first male and first non-religious president in the university’s history, and he is recognized as one of the longest-serving current university presidents in New Jersey.
Dr. Marbach’s Retirement Announcement

Under his leadership, the university introduced nine undergraduate majors and three master’s degree programs, along with a Doctor of Psychology in School Psychology—the first doctoral program in the institution’s history. Dr. Marbach has embraced modernization trends by updating curricula and operational practices, exemplified by renaming the School of Business to reflect advancements in digital technology.
Response to COVID-19 Pandemic
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Marbach led the transition to full remote learning and established a vaccination clinic on campus in collaboration with local health authorities. His administration has also focused on health initiatives, including a compressed four-day workweek for employees and the implementation of smoke-free campus policies.

The Board of Trustees plans to appoint an interim president before Dr. Marbach’s term concludes to ensure a smooth transition as the university continues to pursue its mission.
