Gov. Greg Abbott has proposed to maintain a two-year freeze on tuition at public colleges and universities in Texas. This initiative seeks to extend the existing tuition freeze that was implemented during the previous legislative session.
Governor’s Consultation and Investments in Education
In a letter to the regents of the state’s university systems, Abbott indicated that he has consulted with them and that they concur with his stance. The governor pointed out that the state has made considerable investments in higher education, which include increased funding for universities and financial aid initiatives. The aim of these investments is to enhance accessibility and affordability in higher education for residents of Texas, thereby enabling them to secure higher wages and improve their quality of life.
Funding and Commitments from University Leaders
During the last legislative session, Texas lawmakers allocated an additional $700 million to bolster public universities in the state, following a request from university leaders. In return for this funding, these leaders agreed to maintain flat tuition rates for undergraduate students throughout the 2024-2025 budget cycle.
Current Costs of Attendance
Data indicates that the average cost of attendance for in-state students at public universities in Texas is approximately $28,724, encompassing tuition, fees, housing, books, and other associated costs, with regular tuition and fees contributing just over $10,200 to this total.
Focus on College Affordability
As the upcoming legislative session approaches, Abbott has reiterated that maintaining college affordability will continue to be a key priority for the state.
