The fourth annual Presidential Symposium at Hofstra University took place from September 23-26, 2024, offering a comprehensive analysis of critical issues related to higher education in an election year. This event brought together all twelve academic schools and colleges at Hofstra, each presenting their unique perspectives on the relationship between academia, politics, and policy across various disciplines and professions.
Throughout the symposium, esteemed faculty, guest speakers, and students engaged in meaningful discussions regarding the impact of national elections on higher education, both inside and outside the classroom. The event culminated in a keynote address titled “Political Polarization and Identity” delivered by Dr. Lilliana Mason from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Mason emphasized that, despite the existing divisions among political groups, there exists significant common ground among Americans on key policy matters.
Panel discussions throughout the symposium explored the role of universities in shaping critical policy dialogues, including those surrounding environmental and healthcare issues, as well as the principles of academic freedom. The symposium highlighted the vital role of fostering inclusive communities, not only within higher education but also throughout society at large.
