Brown University has announced new initiatives aimed at increasing diversity in its student body in response to a recent decline in racial and socioeconomic diversity among incoming first-year students. This decline has been attributed to the Supreme Court’s recent decision prohibiting race-conscious admissions.
New Recruitment Positions
To counteract this trend, the university plans to create six new recruitment positions, consisting of five regionally-based admissions roles focused on local outreach and an additional position that will enhance alumni relations within underrepresented communities.
Improving Access and Financial Aid
As part of its commitment to improving access, Brown will increase financial aid funding to match offers from competing institutions and expand grant opportunities for low-income students visiting the Rhode Island campus. These initiatives form part of a broader strategy to improve the diversity of admitted students from various backgrounds.
Decline in Representation
Recent demographic data indicated that the percentage of first-year students from historically underrepresented backgrounds has dropped to 18%, a decline of 9 percentage points from the previous cohort. Brown has highlighted its proactive outreach efforts, including visits to community organizations and collaborations with other colleges for recruitment.
Concerns Regarding Admissions Policies
Concerns have emerged from students regarding the sufficiency of Brown’s current admissions policies, such as standardized testing requirements and legacy admissions practices, in promoting a diverse student population.
Enhanced Outreach Strategy
In response, the university will enhance its outreach strategy by revising communication efforts directed at prospective students, families, and supporting organizations. New materials will focus on accessibility and support services and will educate guidance counselors about Brown’s individualized admissions process.
Commitment to Diversity
University officials have reiterated their commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, indicating that they will evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment efforts annually to ensure a supportive admissions pipeline. These initiatives will involve collaboration among various departments, including admissions, alumni relations, legal, and diversity offices.
Leveraging Alumni Network
Additionally, Brown aims to leverage its alumni network, which includes approximately 750 volunteers, to foster connections with prospective students and engage with diverse affinity groups.
