Impact of Cloud Cover and Urban Structures on Sunlight Availability in Cities

Recent research led by scholars at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has revealed that both cloud cover and urban structures play a significant role in limiting the amount of sunlight that reaches city areas, which could have negative implications for public health. This study, published in the journal Nature Cities, introduces a framework for evaluating sunlight duration in urban settings and uncovers a reduction of 2,896 hours, approximately 121 days, of sunlight availability during the year 2020. Of this overall reduction, cloud cover was responsible for 2,448 hours (equating to 102 days), while urban structures were linked to a loss of 448 hours (or 19 days).

Sunlight is essential for maintaining public health, as it contributes to the synthesis of vitamin D and supports psychological well-being. The optimal amount of sunlight exposure, representing the ideal conditions without any obstructions, is estimated to be around 4,460 hours per year. However, urban environments, especially those dominated by skyscrapers, can obstruct natural sunlight by as much as 90%. This obstruction increases the risk of health problems like vitamin D deficiency and myopia, particularly in vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Importance of Sunlight in Urban Planning

The findings of this study underscore the critical need to incorporate sunlight access into urban planning frameworks, particularly as urbanization accelerates. The research also pointed out that northern and coastal regions experience more significant reductions in sunlight due to geographic differences in cloud cover and shading from urban structures.

Interdisciplinary Approaches to Urban Planning

Professor Bin Chen, the principal investigator of this study, has highlighted the necessity for interdisciplinary strategies in urban planning to ensure sufficient sunlight exposure, especially in light of the trends surrounding increasing urbanization and cloud cover.
