Increase in Core Funding for Irish Universities Announced in 2025 Budget

Irish universities have acknowledged an increase in core funding outlined in the government’s 2025 budget, although they have expressed concerns that the rise does not sufficiently address an ongoing funding shortfall.

Funding the Future Initiative

As part of the Funding the Future initiative, core funding will increase by €50 million (£41.7 million) in 2025, with an additional €150 million projected by 2029. The budget, presented by Finance Minister Jack Chambers and Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe, designates a total of €4.5 billion to the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science (DFHERIS).

Acknowledgment from the Irish Universities Association

The Irish Universities Association (IUA) acknowledged the funding increase, stating that the additional resources would allow universities to enhance personnel and support systems essential for producing high-quality graduates in the workforce.

Concerns Over Funding Shortfall

However, the IUA noted that this increase does not fully address the identified funding gap of €307 million. They emphasized the need for future budgets to adequately tackle this shortfall and adhere to the government’s commitment to higher education funding.
