JCC GEAR UP Program Empowers Jamestown High School Freshmen for Higher Education Success

The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) initiative at Jamestown Community College (JCC) is offering resources to freshmen at Jamestown High School, particularly those facing economic difficulties. This program falls under a national initiative authorized by the U.S. Department of Education and is administered in New York by the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC). Its purpose is to assist at-risk high school students in becoming prepared for college and career paths.

Comprehensive Support for Students

Since seventh grade, students at Jamestown High School have participated in the GEAR UP program, which will continue to support them throughout their freshman year of college. The program provides a variety of resources, including academic tutoring, college and career counseling, college tours, financial literacy education, and mentorship opportunities. These services are designed to help students transition from high school to higher education successfully.

Overcoming Educational Obstacles

The GEAR UP initiative aims to help students overcome various obstacles they may encounter on their educational journeys and to reach their academic potential. The program places a strong emphasis on early exposure to college settings and career exploration, key components for informed decision-making and setting future goals.

Professional Development for Educators

Moreover, the program also offers professional development for educators, including teachers, counselors, and school administrators. This ensures that those involved in student support are equipped with the necessary skills to effectively assist students.

Innovative Activities

An innovative element of the GEAR UP program is the inclusion of drone soccer, an eSport that merges traditional soccer with drone operation. This activity offers students a unique opportunity to engage in a fun, technical activity while exposing them to possible careers in fields such as aviation, technology, and engineering.

Positive Outcomes for Participants

Students participating in the program, such as ninth-grader Abraham Valderrama Bones, have reported improvements in their academic performance, mental health, and motivation as significant outcomes of their involvement.

Transformative Effects of the Program

Nichole Segrue, the director of JCC GEAR UP, highlighted the program’s transformative effects, indicating that it helps students dismantle barriers and pursue goals they might have previously seen as out of reach.

Commitment to Student Development

Continuing its commitment to student development, the program will offer annual state-sponsored summer leadership academies that focus on educational and enrichment opportunities. A recent five-day academy at Ithaca College allowed students to explore their creative skills through application design and development.

JCC remains dedicated to fostering a supportive atmosphere for students as they navigate their educational trajectories.
