John F. Barthell, a professor of biology at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), has been inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame for 2024. The induction occurred during the 30th annual banquet and ceremony held on November 4 at UCO’s Nigh University Center.
Recognition of Contributions
Barthell’s induction underscores nearly three decades of service at UCO, where he has made notable contributions to scholarship, teaching, and leadership within the higher education landscape. UCO President Todd G. Lamb remarked that Barthell’s efforts have had a positive impact on communities around the world, reflecting his dedication to students and undergraduate research.
Leadership at UCO
Starting his tenure at UCO in 1995, Barthell has occupied various administrative positions, including assistant dean and dean of the College of Mathematics and Science. He served as provost and vice president for academic affairs for six and a half years. In January 2020, his extensive experience led him to become a rotating Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Virginia, marking him as the first faculty member from a regional institution in Oklahoma to participate in this program.
Research Contributions
Additionally, Barthell has directed an NSF-funded summer Research for Undergraduates (REU) program focused on the ecology of solitary and honeybees. This initiative addresses critical issues such as plant-pollinator interactions and climate change responses, fostering international collaboration and contributing to research on global pollinator decline. His commitment to undergraduate research was recognized when he was named a CUR Fellow by the Council for Undergraduate Research in 2022.
