Johns Hopkins University Ranked 16th in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025

Johns Hopkins University has been ranked 16th globally in the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Released this week, the rankings evaluate 2,092 institutions from 115 countries using 18 performance indicators that assess factors such as teaching quality, research excellence, and institutional influence.

In the latest rankings, Johns Hopkins University achieved a perfect score of 100 in the “Industry” category, which evaluates innovation, knowledge transfer, and commercial funding. This performance places the university among 34 institutions that received the highest score in this category.

Historically, Johns Hopkins has maintained a strong presence in global rankings, previously holding the 15th position for two consecutive years. Within the United States, it is ranked 10th out of 174 institutions included in the current rankings.

The top position continues to be held by Oxford University, which has remained at the forefront for nine consecutive years. Other notable institutions in the rankings include MIT, Harvard, Princeton, and Cambridge.

Overview of Ranking Categories

The Times Higher Education rankings assess universities across five main categories:

Teaching

Ranked 22nd: This category evaluates the quality of the learning environment and the university’s commitment to supporting students, considering factors such as reputation, student-to-staff ratio, and institutional income.

Research Environment

Ranked 18th: This category examines research productivity, reputation, and funding.

Research Quality

Ranked 21st: This category analyzes the strength and influence of research, as well as citation frequency.

Industry

Ranked 1st: This category measures the university’s capacity to support industry growth and economic needs through innovation and the attraction of commercial funding, including patent citations related to its research.

International Outlook

Ranked 219th: This category assesses the university’s ability to attract international faculty and students and its global collaboration through co-authorships.

Earlier in October 2024, Johns Hopkins also achieved a national ranking of 6th in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual undergraduate rankings, marking the highest position the university has attained since the rankings began in the 1980s.
