Kent State University has established a partnership with officials from the Turkmenistan Ministry of Education and the U.S. State Department to advance the internationalization of Turkmenistan’s higher education system. This collaboration was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding during a recent visit, which intends to foster partnerships between Kent State and three public universities in Turkmenistan: the International University for Humanities and Development, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, and the Turkmen State Institute of Architecture and Construction.
Purpose of the Partnership
As a former Soviet republic located in Central Asia, Turkmenistan has historically adhered to a structured model of higher education. The partnership with Kent State aims to facilitate the growth and modernization of the participating universities while improving access to education that aligns with international standards. This initiative is designed to position Turkmenistan as a more active participant in the global education landscape.
Opportunities for Exchange
The collaboration is anticipated to offer academic and cultural exchange opportunities for students from both Turkmenistan and Kent State University. The signing ceremony featured cultural performances from Turkmen dancers and musicians, commemorating the legacy of the 18th-century poet and philosopher Magtymguly Fragi, who played a crucial role in shaping Turkmen literature and national identity.
