Secretary Mumin participated in discussions with CEHD Dean Monika Williams Shealey, along with a group of administrators, educators, and students, regarding recent educational support measures initiated by Governor Josh Shapiro. Initiatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Education

The Secretary outlined several initiatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, including the introduction of a new career and technical education program focused on high school students, the allocation of $1.5 million in grants aimed at recruiting and retaining special education teachers, and the creation of a Student Teacher Support Program that offers stipends for student teachers.

Temple University’s Role in Educational Development

Mumin also recognized Temple University as a research institution, noting that education is often community-based, with many students choosing to remain in the regions where they were educated. He emphasized the importance of Temple’s contributions to educational development in Philadelphia.

Dean Shealey emphasized the need for state support in attracting new educators and assisting existing teachers. She remarked on the significance of Secretary Mumin’s visit and his advocacy for educational equity, which aligns with the college’s mission.

During the visit, three CEHD faculty members discussed various programs, including the Temple Education Scholars Program, the Temple Teacher Residency Program, and the Center for Professional Development in Career and Technical Education, which equips individuals with technical skills for teaching roles.

Shealey highlighted the importance of collaboration with industry to enhance adult education and to raise awareness among younger students about workforce needs in Pennsylvania.
