Lake Forest College Receives US Department of Education’s Excellence and Equity Ranking

Lake Forest College has been identified as eligible to apply for the U.S. Department of Education’s College Excellence and Equity list. This ranking, which is anticipated to be introduced in early 2025 as part of the Raise the Bar initiative, aims to foster an inclusive higher education environment that provides real value to students while promoting equity and upward mobility.

Recognition of Lake Forest College

In its inaugural year, the Department of Education has selected 200 institutions as eligible for this recognition, with Lake Forest College noted among the top 100 four-year colleges and universities. This distinction places them in a separate category from the remaining 100 institutions, which are two-year colleges. The eligibility evaluation was based on data from over 6,000 colleges.

Focus on Equity

This new recognition differs from traditional rankings by prioritizing equity in various areas, including admission processes, graduation rates, and post-degree employment outcomes, particularly for low-income and underrepresented student groups. It assesses the costs of degrees in relation to the average salaries reported by graduates. The overarching aim is to highlight institutions that assist all students in gaining affordable and meaningful credentials that improve their future prospects.

Secretary of Education’s Vision

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the initiative’s vision, suggesting that an ideal future would see schools with a high number of Pell Grant recipients receive the highest rankings in publications like U.S. News and World Report, shifting the definition of prestige towards those institutions that effectively prepare graduates for the workforce and meaningful community engagement.

Achievements in Social Mobility

Lake Forest College has also been ranked #1 in the nation for Social Mobility in the recent U.S. News & World Report rankings, marking the second consecutive year that it has achieved this status. Additional information regarding the College Excellence and Equity list and the upcoming rankings is available through the U.S. Department of Education’s official resources.
