Michael Lovell, President of Marquette University, Passes Away During Trip to Italy
Michael Lovell, the president of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has passed away while on a trip to Italy. Lovell was participating in a Jesuit formation pilgrimage in Rome with his wife, Amy, and members of the Society of Jesus and the university’s Board of Trustees when he fell ill and required hospitalization.
Lovell had been battling sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, for three years prior to his passing at the age of 57. Before his tenure at Marquette University, Lovell served as the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and dean of its engineering school.
University leadership noted Lovell’s dedication to the campus community, emphasizing his active participation in various events and his ongoing involvement in teaching undergraduate courses.
A campus prayer vigil is currently being organized, with further funeral arrangements to be announced.
