National University has named Dr. Steven Johnson as the executive director of strategic partnerships in Texas. Dr. Johnson’s career in higher education leadership spans over two decades and includes pivotal roles such as chancellor and regional vice president at Western Governors University (WGU) Texas, president of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, and chief operating officer of the Texas Association of Community Colleges.

Milliron, president and CEO of National University, stated that Dr. Johnson’s understanding of the needs of Texas communities, employers, and students will support the university’s strategic partnership efforts with various organizations, including industry, community colleges, and school districts.

Dr. Johnson’s Career Path

Dr. Johnson’s professional journey began at the Texas Association of Community Colleges, where he served as vice president of public affairs for eleven years before advancing to senior vice president and chief operating officer. In his recent role at WGU Texas, he oversaw the Texas affiliate, which serves more than 14,000 students, and focused on building partnerships to enhance educational access and affordability. Before joining National University, he served as president of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, advocating for the institution and establishing connections with state legislators and officials.

At National University, Dr. Johnson will concentrate on developing and maintaining partnerships throughout Texas. The university currently collaborates with several national companies and organizations with a presence in the state, including Southwest Airlines, Amazon, Best Buy, Boys & Girls Club of Texas, Texas Children’s Hospital, and various educational institutions.
