New Chancellor of Higher Education Sean Burrage Sworn In as Oklahoma’s Educational Leader

Sean Burrage has been sworn in as the new chancellor of higher education in Oklahoma City, taking over the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, which oversees public colleges and universities in the state. He was appointed to the position in October and succeeds Allison Garrett, who served in the role for three years. Burrage’s annual salary has been established at $415,000.

Swearing-In Ceremony

During the swearing-in ceremony, Burrage’s father, former U.S. District Judge Michael Burrage, administered the oath of office. Burrage acknowledged the support he received from family, friends, colleagues, the regents, and Garrett, which facilitated a smooth transition into his new role.

Address and Agenda

In his address, Burrage highlighted accountability and transparency as key components of his agenda, asserting the significance of public education. He affirmed a commitment to providing Oklahoma residents with opportunities to attain college degrees. “Accountability will be central to the work ahead. We will be accountable for funding, appropriation, and the expectations from private investors as well as our education system,” he stated.

Blueprint 2030

Burrage referenced “Blueprint 2030,” a strategic framework established by the regents which aims to improve educational outcomes and enhance workforce readiness for graduates. His objectives include increasing the number of degree holders in Oklahoma, fostering partnerships with business and workforce leaders, retaining graduates in the state’s workforce, and encouraging students to pursue degrees in critical areas such as teaching and nursing.

Previous Experience

Prior to this appointment, Burrage served as the vice president for executive affairs and chief of staff at the University of Oklahoma. His career includes leadership roles such as president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University and serving as the minority floor leader in the Oklahoma Senate from 2011 to 2014, where he represented Rogers and Mayes Counties.

Support from the Regents

Dennis Casey, Chair of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, expressed support for Burrage’s leadership, noting confidence in his ability to advance the goals outlined in “Blueprint 2030,” particularly in enhancing the workforce in critical professions.

Education and Background

Burrage, an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation and a native Oklahoman, holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a law degree from the University of Oklahoma.
