Northwestern University Celebrates Research Success in Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Rankings

Northwestern University has achieved the 11th position in the inaugural Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025, as reported in the recent release. This ranking acknowledges Northwestern’s engagement in addressing critical global challenges through interdisciplinary research, with participation from nearly 750 universities across 92 countries, marking the largest initial ranking conducted by THE.

Collaboration Across Diverse Research Fields

The rankings underscore Northwestern’s success in promoting collaboration across diverse research fields. Eric Perreault, Vice President for Research, indicated that the university’s accomplishments are attributed to a strong interdisciplinary framework, which is bolstered by various centers and institutes that facilitate collective problem-solving. He noted the roles of established organizations like the Institute for Policy Research and the Materials Research Center, along with emerging innovation centers such as the Center for Synthetic Biology.

Evaluating Interdisciplinary Scientific Efforts

The THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, developed in collaboration with Schmidt Science Fellows, aim to recognize and promote interdisciplinary scientific efforts within global higher education. The evaluation criteria encompass three primary areas: funding inputs, processes for success including facilities and administrative support, and outputs linked to research publications and their quality.

International Insights from Academics

In early 2024, THE conducted an international survey among seasoned academics to gather insights regarding their experiences with interdisciplinary research and the institutional support available to them. The results from this survey played a significant role in shaping the rankings, in addition to institutional data and bibliometric analyses contributed by universities.
