Oxford University has been recognized as the top university in the world for the ninth consecutive year in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2025. This achievement marks a record duration for any institution at the number one position since the rankings began in 2017.
Largest Evaluation to Date
The 2025 rankings assessed a total of 2,092 universities across 115 countries, representing the largest evaluation conducted to date. Oxford University faced competition from other esteemed institutions such as Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), both of which have previously attained the top rank.

The rankings are derived from 18 specific metrics divided into five primary categories: research environment, research excellence, teaching environment, international outlook, and industry income. Oxford has received recognition for its robust international outlook and considerable contributions to global research initiatives.
Announcement of Results
The results were announced during the World Academic Summit, which was attended by around 500 participants from various countries. Following Oxford in the rankings were the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, securing the second and third positions, respectively.
