LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 2, 2024) — The University of Kentucky recently hosted the “Ag is For All” event, attracting 68 middle and high school students from across the Commonwealth and surrounding areas. Organized by the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment (CAFE), the program aimed to provide participants with insights into the college experience and the variety of academic programs available.
Objective and Importance of the Program
Kendriana Price, Ed.D., assistant dean for community relations and engagement, indicated that the initiative targets students from underrepresented groups, with the objective of fostering connections between these students and the university community. The program is designed to inform attendees about their educational options and enhance accessibility to higher education.
Event Activities and Support
The event included multiple sessions facilitated by student volunteers from Martin-Gatton CAFE, aimed at simplifying the college admission process. Participants received guidance on admissions procedures, scholarship opportunities, and assistance with filling out FAFSA forms.
Student Feedback
Jaida Alee, a senior in equine science and management at the university, noted her satisfaction in interacting with students and sharing her experiences at the event. She remarked on the supportive atmosphere created throughout the sessions.
Growth and Future Plans
Organizers reported that attendance has doubled since the first event, which welcomed 34 participants. Future plans for the conference include additional sessions specifically for first-generation high school students and their families, aiming to further establish a supportive environment for prospective students.
