This generation, aged 12 to 27, has been shaped by numerous national crises, including the 9/11 attacks, various military conflicts, the Great Recession, and the continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Research indicates that obtaining a college degree can be economically beneficial. Individuals possessing bachelor’s degrees are estimated to earn approximately $1.2 million more over their lifetimes compared to those without degrees. Furthermore, a report from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce predicts that by 2025, 85% of quality job openings will require postsecondary degrees or credentials.

Job Market Trends

In Indiana, for example, job growth in healthcare, technology, and traditional blue-collar sectors increasingly favors candidates with higher education credentials. Data also shows a correlation between holding a college degree and enhanced personal satisfaction, longer life expectancy, and greater civic engagement.

The current generation exhibits resilience comparable to that of the post-World War II generation, who benefited from the G.I. Bill, which provided educational opportunities instrumental for social and economic progress.
