Sean Burrage has been officially inaugurated as the tenth chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. The swearing-in ceremony occurred during a meeting of the State Regents on December 6, 2024.
Background and Experience
Burrage has an extensive background in higher education administration, having previously served as president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University and vice president for executive affairs and chief of staff at the University of Oklahoma. His political experience includes tenure as a state senator and minority floor leader.
Involvement in Education Initiatives
Beyond his administrative roles, Burrage participated in former Governor Mary Fallin’s Education Advisory Committee and contributed to various strategic planning initiatives, including the Regent’s Task Force on the Future of Higher Education and the Blueprint 2030 committee. He succeeds Allison Garrett, who held the chancellor position for three years.
Commitment to Workforce Development
As a member of the Choctaw Nation, Burrage has articulated a commitment to addressing workforce shortages in critical fields such as engineering, nursing, and education. Following his inauguration, he emphasized the importance of preparing individuals for careers in these areas, stating the need for increased recruitment and retention of students within these disciplines.
The Role of the Chancellor
The chancellor’s role is guided by the State Regents, the governing body for 25 public colleges and universities in Oklahoma, ensuring the maintenance of academic standards, budget management, and oversight of scholarship programs. The Regents are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate, with terms lasting nine years.
