Sean Burrage Sworn in as Chancellor of Oklahoma State System of Higher Education

Sean Burrage has been sworn in as the tenth chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education during a recent State Regents meeting. This appointment follows a national search for a successor to former chancellor Allison Garrett, who held the position for three years.

Background and Experience

Burrage has previously served as president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University and has held the role of vice president for executive affairs and chief of staff at the University of Oklahoma. His experience also includes a tenure as a state senator, where he was the minority floor leader. Throughout his career, Burrage has been involved in various educational initiatives, including participation in former Governor Mary Fallin’s Education Advisory Committee and the Regent’s Task Force on the Future of Higher Education. He was also a member of the strategic planning committee for the Blueprint 2030 initiative.

Commitment to Workforce Development

As a member of the Choctaw Nation, Burrage has expressed a commitment to improving workforce development in high-demand areas. He has underscored the necessity of increasing the number of professionals in fields such as engineering, nursing, and education, advocating for collaboration with institutions to enhance student recruitment and retention in these critical areas.

Responsibilities as Chancellor

In his new role, Burrage will report to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, the body responsible for overseeing academic standards, budgets, and scholarships at 25 public colleges and universities in Oklahoma. The Regents are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate, serving terms of nine years.
