With less than two weeks remaining until Election Day, candidates for Oklahoma Senate District 21 engaged in a debate at the Stillwater Public Library. Democratic candidate Robin Fuxa and Republican candidate Dr. Randy “Doc” Grellner presented their respective policy positions to voters from parts of Payne and Creek counties.
Education and Healthcare
Fuxa, drawing on her 24 years of experience in education, underscored the significance of public schools and expressed her commitment to improving healthcare access, childcare services, and support for veterans. She criticized the current state of education in Oklahoma, attributing it to what she described as detrimental policies implemented by Oklahoma’s Superintendent Ryan Walters, whom she identified as a major concern among constituents.
In contrast, Grellner aimed to address key issues affecting Oklahomans, specifically the increasing costs of healthcare. He articulated a desire for the state to provide an environment where future generations can thrive. While Grellner stated that he does not always agree with Walters, he defended the Superintendent, asserting that Walters has honored his campaign commitments and has not faced any legal charges.
Abortion Laws
A range of topics was addressed during the debate, including abortion laws in Oklahoma, which currently permit the procedure only in emergency medical situations. Fuxa contended that the state’s legal stance has deterred obstetricians and gynecologists from practicing in Oklahoma, advocating for a model that trusts families to make essential decisions in times of crisis. Conversely, Grellner expressed his opposition to legalizing abortion, asserting that life begins at conception and should be protected under the Constitution.
Funding for Higher Education
Discussing the funding of higher education, Fuxa noted that state funding has decreased by over 30% since the 2018 teacher walkout, arguing that adequate investment in universities is vital for expanding opportunities in Oklahoma. Grellner recognized the fundraising efforts of institutions such as Oklahoma State University but did not completely endorse Fuxa’s views on funding requirements.
Community Engagement
The debate attracted attention from attendees, including supporters who expressed appreciation for the opportunity to observe the candidates’ positions and personal expressions firsthand.
