Students as Co-Creators in Online Learning: Enhancing Education Through Collaborative Content Development

A new initiative at the University of Derby has been launched to involve students in the development and enhancement of online learning content through paid opportunities. This program is designed to improve learning experiences, alleviate the academic workload for faculty, and address disparities in academic achievement.

Learning Design Assistants Program

During the 2023/24 academic year, the University recruited students to act as learning design assistants, allowing them to undertake a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Generating alternative text for images to enhance accessibility.
  • Creating captions for multimedia resources.
  • Developing activities aimed at promoting student engagement and reflection.
  • Suggesting multimedia elements to enrich course content.
  • Ensuring that all online materials comply with university quality standards.

The roles last approximately eight weeks and offer students professional experience along with mentorship from senior staff members. Participants in the program have the opportunity to boost their employability while also making contributions to their academic communities.

Impact on Participants

Feedback from participants has indicated that their involvement has positively influenced their educational experiences and career trajectories. Notably, one student has secured a teaching position at another institution, while another has begun doctoral studies focused on teaching practices in higher education.

Addressing Educational Inequities

The initiative seeks not only to enhance the quality of online learning materials but also to address educational inequities by making learning experiences more accessible and relevant to all students. By incorporating student perspectives in the content creation process, the program aims to foster an inclusive learning environment that engages a diverse student body.

Ongoing Evaluation

An evaluation of the program’s effect on teaching quality and student development is currently in progress. The strategy of co-creation has the potential to enhance academic content while equipping students with essential skills and insights as they prepare for future endeavors in academia and related fields.
