This marks a rise for the University of Johannesburg, which moved up from second place last year, achieving the highest overall score of over 80, distinguishing it as the only institution in the ranking to reach this score. The University of Pretoria follows in the second position, while the University of the Witwatersrand has fallen to third place. As a result, South African universities occupy the top three rankings within Sub-Saharan Africa.

The rankings indicate that the average overall score for the ten South African universities assessed is 65 out of 100. This score represents the highest average among countries in the region that have at least ten ranked institutions, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Somalia.
Ranking Methodology
The Sub-Saharan Africa Rankings gauge universities based on various criteria related to teaching, research, and broader societal impact. The 2024 rankings are the second iteration of this evaluation, reflecting an updated methodology intended to improve the comparability of universities. The assessment criteria are divided into five main pillars: resources and finance, access and fairness, student engagement, ethical leadership—introduced this year—and Africa impact.
