The Future of Higher Education: Examining Trump’s Impact on College Policies and Diversity

The election of Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race has the potential to significantly alter higher education in the United States, with ramifications for colleges and universities across the country.

Central to Trump’s Educational Agenda

Central to Trump’s educational agenda is the plan to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. This move could transfer regulatory powers to individual states and result in the loss of billions in scholarship funding for low-income students. The initiative seeks to reduce federal oversight and support for diversity programs that many institutions rely on to foster inclusive environments. While Trump would require Congressional approval to completely abolish the department, he is anticipated to pursue the reallocation of specific responsibilities and a reduction in federal funding.

Agenda 47: Addressing Accreditation Bias

Trump’s “Agenda 47” presents a strategy aimed at addressing what he identifies as “leftist bias” in the accreditation process. This process often assesses institutions based on their commitments to diversity and inclusion. Under his plan, private universities with significant endowments that do not align with his policies could face strict financial penalties. Proposed measures may include taxation and fines, which could generate significant revenue. Such actions may also result in extensive legal disputes and change how institutions manage funding and adhere to federal regulations.

Elimination of DEI Roles

In his efforts to reshape higher education, Trump seeks to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles at colleges and universities, imposing stricter controls while promoting traditional American values. This approach could undermine financial support for DEI programs and affect employment levels for those dedicated to such initiatives.

Abolishing Race-Based Admissions

Additionally, Trump has voiced an intention to abolish what he refers to as “equity-driven discrimination” in universities, proposing substantial financial consequences for institutions that maintain race-based admissions practices. According to his proposals, endowment taxes may be applied, and he has suggested the elimination of student loan forgiveness programs. He advocates for a more affordable, expedited degree pathway through a federally funded online American Academy, which he describes as free of “woke” or politically motivated content.

Punishing Campus Protests

Trump’s policies could also impose stricter penalties on campus protests, potentially resulting in disciplinary measures against student demonstrators. If enacted, these proposals are expected to challenge current DEI policies and substantially reshape the cultural landscape of higher education in the United States.
