Transforming Higher Education: Dr. John A. Nunes Leads Change at California Lutheran University

Dr. John A. Nunes has oriented his leadership efforts at California Lutheran University towards strengthening its foundation and enhancing support for students from underserved populations. Since assuming the role of interim president on June 1, 2024, Nunes has engaged with the university community, drawing from his extensive 40 years of experience in faith-based and nonprofit sectors. His background includes roles in community-based urban development, international relief efforts, and university leadership, all of which inform his current approach.

Empathetic Decisiveness in Leadership

In light of the challenges faced by smaller private liberal arts institutions, Nunes advocates for what he terms “empathetic decisiveness.” He emphasizes the need for thoughtful decision-making in response to current circumstances, noting, “We’re not in a precarious situation, but we are in one that requires action, adaptation, and reimagination.”

Lutheran Mission and Values

California Lutheran University maintains a nonsectarian status while being affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Nunes, an ordained Lutheran minister for over 30 years, earned a Ph.D. from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He underlines the importance of the Lutheran liberal arts tradition, which supports critical thinking and inclusivity. Nunes is committed to upholding the principle of democratizing knowledge, a core tenet of the Lutheran Reformation, while ensuring diversity remains pivotal in the university’s future direction.

Focus on Diversity and Inclusion

The university has been designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and features a predominantly minority student body. Nunes aims to deepen the institution’s understanding of its HSI status and has established goals, such as achieving the Seal of Excelencia from Excelencia in Education. He emphasizes creating an inclusive environment where each individual is recognized for their inherent value and purpose.

Building Community Beyond Culture

To further these initiatives, Nunes seeks to foster a sense of belonging among students beyond cultural events, aiming for representation in the academic environment. Additionally, he has implemented a leadership development program targeting mid-level faculty and staff. With a two-year interim term ahead, Nunes is focused on leading substantive efforts rather than serving merely as a placeholder. He acknowledges the pressing challenges within the evolving landscape of higher education, which require reconsideration of the university’s business model, enhancement of campus culture, and revisions to governance strategies.

Data-Driven Approach to Academic Programs

Currently, California Lutheran University is undertaking an academic program analysis that aligns with market trends. The university’s Center for Economic Research and Forecasting is engaged in generating reports that examine the economic contributions of Latino and Latina communities. Nunes emphasizes the importance of a data-driven decision-making process to ensure that academic programs effectively address the needs of its diverse student body.
