The Vice-Chancellors of Cambridge and Oxford universities have reaffirmed a collaborative partnership with Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) aimed at enhancing global research through cross-border initiatives. This longstanding partnership, which has been in existence for over fifty years, was formalized via a renewed Memorandum of Understanding, originally signed in 2009. The signing took place during a ceremony at the Belgian Embassy in London.
Origins of the Collaboration
The collaboration traces its origins back to 1965 with the establishment of the Belgian public interest organization Fondation Wiener-Anspach (FWA). Since then, many students, researchers, and academics have participated in exchanges among the three institutions. FWA facilitates scientific exchanges by providing fellowships and grants and supports research collaborations across various fields.
Notable Attendees
The recent ceremony featured notable attendees, including Professor Deborah Prentice, Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University; Professor Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University; and Professor Anne Weyembergh, Vice-Rector for External Relations and Cooperation at ULB.
Emphasis on Academic Growth
During the event, Professor Prentice articulated the importance of the partnership, emphasizing its role in providing students and scholars from Brussels, Oxford, and Cambridge with opportunities to establish a strong presence in academia and beyond. She expressed optimism that the partnership would continue to promote scientific progress and support the development of innovative enterprises and careers in public service on both sides of the English Channel.
