Two Key Issues Facing Global Higher Education in the Post-Pandemic Era

Recent analyses reveal that global higher education is encountering substantial difficulties in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fernando León García, the outgoing head of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), notes a concerning trend of institutions regressing in their commitment to global education initiatives.

Insular Practices and Engagement Decline

García points out a retreat into insular practices among universities, which undermines efforts to promote global collaboration and address educational inequities. This observation comes in light of a significant decrease in engagement with IAUP assessments; the 2024 report on post-pandemic initiatives garnered only 60 responses from the higher education community worldwide, a stark contrast to the 801 responses received in the prior assessment.

The Impact of the Pandemic on Workforce Readiness

One prominent issue highlighted is the influence of the pandemic on the approach to workforce readiness and digital infrastructure within higher education. García asserts that there was an initial emphasis on strengthening international partnerships and improving communication between institutions. However, recent shifts in U.S. policy, including restrictions on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and alterations to affirmative action policies, have cultivated a more regressive environment in certain segments of higher education.

Geopolitical Tensions and Academic Collaboration

Additionally, while some institutions are exploring innovative international partnerships, geopolitical tensions, particularly involving China, present potential risks to academic collaboration. The recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action has already disrupted several race-based scholarship and internship programs designed to enhance success rates for Black students in various institutions across the United States.

Fostering International Collaborations

The IAUP’s 2024 report highlights the critical need for fostering international collaborations to bolster academic prestige and global standing. García emphasizes the importance of dialogue among higher education leaders to navigate the complexities of the current landscape effectively.

Proposed Strategies for Higher Education Institutions

To address these challenges, García proposes several strategies for higher education institutions: utilizing technology for student-centered learning, investing in faculty development, focusing on workplace-related skills, enhancing student support systems, and pursuing sustainable financial practices that align with mission-driven goals.

The Imperative for Proactive Leadership

As García prepares to conclude his term, he stresses the imperative for university leaders to proactively tackle these challenges to maintain the relevance and effectiveness of higher education in a post-pandemic context.
