UH’s GEAR UP Oʻahu Program: Boosting Higher Education Opportunities for Students

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has received an $8.3 million grant for its GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Oʻahu initiative, aimed at improving college readiness among students. This funding, provided by the U.S. Department of Education, will support approximately 1,600 seventh graders from four middle schools: Dole Intermediate, Kalākaua Intermediate, Wahiawā Intermediate, and Waipahu Intermediate.

GEAR UP Oʻahu Program Focus Areas

The GEAR UP Oʻahu program operates with a focus on three key areas: “Bridges,” which pertains to learning and advancement opportunities; “Backpacks,” which encompasses supplies and essentials for students; and “Beliefs,” aimed at cultivating a mindset centered on persistence and success. This program will provide support to students for seven years, beginning in middle school and continuing through their first year of college, by offering various free resources to develop critical academic skills.

Resources Offered

Resources offered through GEAR UP Oʻahu include peer mentorship, opportunities for early college credit, career exploration, assistance with college applications, summer academic sessions, and visits to college campuses.

Alumni Participation

Additionally, the program highlights the importance of alumni participation, with former GEAR UP graduates, now in college, returning to mentor younger students. These mentors, who are alumni of schools such as Waipahu, Leilehua, and Hilo High Schools, provide valuable insights and support to the current program participants.

Funding and Collaboration

The funding received is one of 24 grants awarded from a pool of 118 national GEAR UP applicants and underscores a collaborative effort among 13 educational programs and offices at UH Mānoa, seven target schools, and 10 community partners.
