University of Arizona Ranked Among Top 25 Public Universities in the U.S. by Times Higher Ed and Research.com

The University of Arizona has been recognized among the top 25 public research institutions in the United States according to two recent international rankings. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2025, the university achieved a global ranking of 136th, placing it 45th in the U.S. and 22nd among U.S. public colleges and universities. This represents an improvement of 19 positions globally and 44 positions within the United States compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the University of Arizona is ranked 14th among state flagship universities and 4th among Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

Global Rankings and Performance

The evaluations in the latest rankings included 2,092 universities across 115 countries, positioning the University of Arizona within the top 7% worldwide. The institution received a research quality score of 86.3 out of 100, alongside an industry engagement score of 81.

Subject Area Rankings

In addition, the university made the top 100 globally for both physical sciences and social sciences, achieving rankings of 65th and 92nd, respectively.

Suresh Garimella, President of the University of Arizona, noted that the ranking showcases the institution’s dedication to education, innovation, and addressing key societal challenges. This recognition highlights the university’s strengths in these areas.

Evaluation Criteria

Times Higher Education has been publishing global university rankings for over two decades, evaluating research-intensive institutions based on 18 performance indicators spread across five categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement.

Improvement in Other Rankings

Additionally, the University of Arizona has experienced an improvement in its position in Research.com’s Best Universities in the World ranking, climbing 26 spots to achieve an overall rank of 68th. Within the U.S., it stands at 38th overall and 20th among public institutions.

Focus on Research and Innovation

Elliott Cheu, interim senior vice president for research and innovation, affirmed the University of Arizona’s commitment to its mission as a leading research institution, which includes a robust focus on public service and research expenditures that exceed $955 million annually.
