The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) has received the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for the seventh consecutive year. This award acknowledges colleges and universities in the health professions within the United States that demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion.
Recognition for Efforts in Equity and Diversity
In the November/December 2024 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity, UMSON is recognized for its significant efforts in advancing equity and diversity. Yvette Conyers, an assistant professor and associate dean for equity, diversity, and inclusion at UMSON, indicated that this recognition highlights the collaborative work of the newly established Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as well as the institution’s broader commitments to creating an inclusive academic environment.
HEED Award Criteria and Student Demographics
The HEED Award criteria include various initiatives aimed at enhancing student recruitment and retention, as well as equitable hiring practices for faculty and staff. UMSON has been proactive in expanding its diversity, with over 60% of its student population identifying as racially and ethnically diverse, and 13% identifying as male, figures that exceed the national averages for nursing schools.
Core Values in Operations
The integration of equity and justice as core values is evident in UMSON’s operations, driven by the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Key initiatives to support these values include partnerships with student organizations, workshops addressing LGBTQ+ issues, inclusive orientation programs for newcomers, and community-building activities that promote engagement and advocacy on campus.
Initiatives and Community Engagement
Significant aspects of UMSON’s diversity initiatives include the formation of an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council, support for student-led organizations, and joint events emphasizing inclusivity. Recent activities have featured documentary screenings and a Peace Vigil in response to global conflicts, which were designed to foster community reflection and support.
Commitment to an Inclusive Environment
The HEED Award underscores UMSON’s dedication to maintaining an inclusive environment and highlights its leadership role in diversity within the health professions.
