Utah State University (USU) has launched the Mehdi Heravi Global Teaching and Learning Center to promote inclusivity amid state-level anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This center features gender-neutral restrooms, lactation and meditation rooms, and an international café with diverse food and beverage options.
Mission and Purpose of the Center
Crescencio López-González, head of the Department of World Languages and Cultures at USU, articulated the center’s mission to serve as a welcoming environment for diverse individuals, particularly in a state where DEI programs have been restricted in higher education settings. The center is designed to create an atmosphere where multicultural students feel appreciated and accepted.
Opening and New Facilities
Opened on October 11, the center consolidates faculty members from over 20 different countries, who were previously spread across various departments on the campus. López-González noted that the center’s new location offers a bright and inviting space, contrasting with the previous, more confined environments. He highlighted that this transformation opens up various opportunities for collaboration and professional development.
Support for Translation and Interpretation Programs
The center’s facilities will also facilitate the growth of USU’s translation and interpretation programs. Elsa Pérez, an assistant professor of translation and interpretation, mentioned a significant demand for medical and legal interpreters, especially for Spanish, Mandarin, and Portuguese speakers. In the medical sector alone, there are about 8,000 requests for translators each month.
Curriculum and Technology Integration
The curriculum for these programs is designed to prepare students with specific terminology relevant to their fields, employing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence to simulate real-world scenarios, including medical consultations and emergency calls. Many students enrolled in these programs are reportedly obtaining high-paying job offers even prior to graduation.
Cultural Hubs for Language Acquisition
To further support language acquisition, the center includes eight cultural hubs dedicated to various languages and cultures, including Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Japanese, German, French, Russian, and English for non-native speakers. Rebecca Walton, executive associate dean for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, indicated that these hubs will enable immersive cultural experiences through activities such as film screenings and culinary events.
Integration of Traditional Elements
These cultural hubs are inspired by a previously established Japanese cultural hub, which has now been incorporated into the new center. This area features traditional elements such as tatami mats and aims to foster a personal and interactive learning environment.
