Delays in visa processing have created significant barriers for international students seeking to travel to the United States for short-term visits. Justice Bawole, dean of the University of Ghana Business School, discussed these challenges during the World Academic Summit held at the University of Manchester.
Challenges in the Current Visa Environment
Bawole stated that the current visa environment has greatly obstructed the organization of brief academic visits to the US. He indicated that excessive delays in obtaining visa interviews have become more pronounced since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Increased Difficulty in Obtaining Visa Interviews
He noted, “Previously, we did not face these challenges; however, it has become exceedingly difficult to obtain an interview. In 2021, we were requesting interviews but only receiving appointments in 2023.” These delays have notably affected study visits that were financially supported by local businesses, leading to the cancellation of planned trips.
Impact on Funding and Academic Opportunities
According to Bawole, funding for these educational trips had already been secured, but the inability to obtain timely visa appointments resulted in the loss of these resources. He emphasized the importance of such visits, which often act as a pathway for students to pursue further academic opportunities, including postgraduate and doctoral studies.
