The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2025 has revealed an increase in the number of ranked universities, with a notable rise in participation from institutions in China and Turkey.
Chinese Universities’ Performance
After two years of declining representation, Chinese universities have made significant gains this year, marking a notable improvement in their rankings. The United States retains its leading position in the rankings, contributing 174 institutions, which is approximately 8% of the total global count of 2,092.
Global Representation Overview
Japan follows with 119 institutions, making up 6% of the overall representation. Close competitors include the United Kingdom and India, each with 107 institutions. This figure indicates a substantial increase for India, which had 75 institutions represented in the previous year. The United Kingdom’s total representation has remained relatively stable since 2021.
Growth in Turkish Institutions
Turkey has also experienced growth, with its representation nearly doubling over four years from 43 institutions in 2021 to 91 in 2025. Chinese participation has rebounded to 94 institutions following a previous downturn.
Other Notable Countries
Other countries with significant representation include Iran and the Russian Federation, each with 81 institutions, followed by Brazil with 61, and Italy and Spain, both contributing 55 institutions.
