World University Rankings 2025: Strengthening Global Research Links Among Ukrainian Universities

Several Ukrainian universities have actively pursued the establishment of global research collaborations since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. This initiative has received substantial support from various international institutions.

Research Growth in Ukrainian Universities

According to bibliometric data compiled by Times Higher Education for the World University Rankings, Ukrainian universities saw a 20 percent increase in research papers produced in collaboration with global partners from 2019 to 2023, resulting in a total of 9,708 papers. In contrast, Russian institutions experienced an 8 percent decline in similar collaborations during the same period, highlighting a notable reduction in international research partnerships due to the ongoing conflict. Although factors such as the time required for research publication and the lingering effects of the pandemic complicate the analysis of these trends, data suggest that collaborative projects between Ukrainian academics and their international counterparts have increased.

Strategic Partnerships and Programs

Olena Tupakhina, vice-rector for international affairs at Zaporizhzhia National University, indicated that before the conflict, existing international cooperation was limited and lacked strategic partnerships. Currently, her institution is engaged in the Twinning Ukraine program, which promotes partnerships between Ukrainian and UK universities, facilitated by the Cormack Consultancy Group. Zaporizhzhia National University is paired with Durham University, collaborating on research initiatives across various disciplines, including history, anthropology, psychology, law, and environmental risks. One specific project aims to evaluate the impacts of military-related hazards on Ukraine’s landscape and ecology.

A Shift Toward Integrated International Collaboration

These collaborative efforts represent a shift toward a more integrated international academic framework, reflecting a proactive response to the challenging circumstances imposed by the ongoing conflict.
